The term “social marketing” in the title got me all excited, then disappointed though! Social marketing is the strategic approach to planned behavior change that improves the well-being of individuals and society. It was first conceived by Philip Kotler–who has been called the father of modern marketing–and Robert Zaltman, at Northwestern University in 1971.
The cool thing is that it is strategic, and uses all of commercial marketing’s tools (product, price, place and promotion) to wrap a social problem in interventions that remedy the problem. so, “real” social marketing is a much bigger umbrella than social networking (though a strategic marketing plan might well utilize social networking as one tactic).
